You wouldn’t think that a boy raised in Atlanta, Georgia would marry a girl from Kiryat Arba, Chevron but this is the month of Nissan – the month of miracles – when the most wondrous and fantastic things become reality.
Last night, in front of a couple hundred people tall Tuvia Maimon Sleigh, and his larger than life personality, married Shira Edri. Rav Shalom Miller, who prepared the groom for the wedding and Jewish married life, was there with the entire Miller family who were all invited by the Chatan’s request.
Shortly after Tuvia made Aliyah he moved to Adam to study Torah at Oro Shel Adam – Yeshiva for Olim. Between May and October, 2018 Tuvia studied with Rav Shalom Gemara, Halacha, and Rambam. The two developed a close relationship over the five months and kept in touch for numerous years while Tuvia was at Bar Ilan getting a degree in English literature.
Tuvia would often say to his rabbi, “when I find the right girl, I’m going to prepare to be a proper Jewish husband with you.”
Those prophetic words came true. Tuvia, dated seriously for a couple of years. After he met Shira and it became clear that the couple was going to be engaged to be married, Tuvia turned to Rav Shalom and said, “its time to pick up our learning again together.”
For six sessions Tuvia and Rav Shalom studied all the halacha and important material that Jewish husbands need to know when they get married.
Tuvia honored Rav Shalom with the fourth blessing under the chuppah. As he left the stage, the Rabbi exclaimed euphorically, “mazal tov!!”
It’s really hard to put to words the joy everyone experienced at Tuvia and Shira’s wedding last night in Yerushalayim. The simcha dancing with all of Tuvia’s friends from Bar Ilan and the community in Givat Shmuel was through the roof with energy and excitement.
Witnessing an Oleh, who has spent a few years developing himself both as a person and as a religious Jew, marry an Israeli woman and start a life together is a great privilege.
The community in Adam could not be happier with this wonderful story and wonderful new couple!
Mazal Tov to Shira and Tuvia! You will no doubt build a beautiful home in Eretz Yisrael!!
